We are actively seeking a Mechanical Superintendent to support Operations in coordinating and planning maintenance work and mechanical repairs on tugs for our operations in Kingston, Jamaica.

YOUR TALENTS WILL BE USED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING CHALLENGES:

Reporting to the Director – Operations, Port of Jamaica, the incumbent’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure overall  maintenance and general upkeep of all machinery and equipment onboard vessels.
  • Plan, coordinate, supervise and monitor preventive maintenance and mechanical work included in the maintenance program (SINEX system) , as well as unscheduled maintenance work and repairs.
  • Inspect maintenance and repair work on vessels to ensure compliance with plans, specifications and the standards of classification societies and flag administrations.
  • Promote and enforce health and safety standards according to the SMS and other standards governing the work of Captains, Engineer Officers and Deckhands.
  • Ensure the implementation and observance of applicable quality standards (ISM, ISPS).
  • Perform and participate in internal audits to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in and prepare vessels for statutory inspections and compliance audits (Class, Flag State, ISM, ISPS etc).
  • Coordinate and report on major maintenance jobs including dry docking.
  • Liaise with external suppliers and contractors regarding the provision of services to the operations.
  • Ensure vessels are ready for inspections.
  • Maintain operational readiness of machinery.
  • Identify needs and issue material and supplier requisitions for the purchasing department.
  • Participate in dockside and at-sea testing of the mechanical systems maintained or repaired.
  • Participate and support the activities of the Health, Safety and Environment Management System.

 

OUR IDEAL COLLEAGUE HAS:

  • Holds a certificate of competency to act as Chief Engineer on board a tug of over 3000 KW
  • Holds a valid medical certificate issued by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica
  • Holds a valid Police Record
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a similar position or in a managerial position
  • Priority management skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Good knowledge of diesel motor mechanics and electronic troubleshooting
  • Good knowledge of start-up and shutdown procedures of tug engine and machinery
  • Knowledge of dry docking procedures
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Positive leadership and ability to mobilize employees under his supervision
  • Thoroughness and autonomy
  • Strong safety culture
